The quality and newsworthiness of her photos combined with her social media savvy made Spc. Venessa Hernandez the clear photographer for October journalist of the month. Because Hernandez’s photos so excellently illustrated 2010 Best Warrior competition, her photos were posted on the DVIDS Facebook and Flickr pages. The Best Warrior Competition draws a lot of internal media attention and with photos like those shot by Hernandez, the competition may have received more attention. One of her photos was also used as the front-page image on DVIDS and was selected as the DVIDS Top photo for October. One of her October photo galleries was viewed more than 1,588 times. Her photos drew a lot of positive feedback on the social networks including the following comments: “amazing lighting, great shot;” “Wow! Outstanding!” and “Oooh the lighting is so goooood.” The feedback demonstrates the quality of Hernandez’s photos. Hernandez promptly replied to the posts on Flickr and Facebook, which is another reason she was selected as the journalist of the month. Her response showed that she monitors her work and understands that social media is about interaction. Social media is a new responsibility for many journalists and Hernandez has clearly already incorporated it in to her workflow.
