While interest in the Pakistan floods appears to have waned, Staff Sgt. Wayne Gray continues to capture the emotion surrounding the ongoing relief efforts. Gray, who is deployed with the 55th Combat Camera, jumps out as journalist of the month because his images convey the emotion of his subjects. The images in the “Pakistan Humanitarian Aid” galleries include portraits of people most affected by the floods. Gray’s images show the stress and frustration of a U.S. Marine assisting with relief efforts, and in contrast the desperation of the Pakistani people rushing to grab food supplies delivered by U.S. Marines. Images like those shot by Gray are more likely to catch the media’s attention because they invoke an emotional response. For the same reason, Gray’s images help to accurately document the disaster and devastation caused by the Pakistan floods. Gray submitted more than 60 images covering different angles of the relief efforts from aerial shots of the flood, the young and old flood victims themselves, to Pakistani and U.S. military personnel providing humanitarian aid. Because of the quality of his images, subject and timeliness, his photos were sent to numerous local, national and international media outlets. Gray further documents relief efforts and the situation in Pakistan with video. So he is able to reach the two primary mediums—TV and print—with his dual journalist coverage of the flood effects. show less
