The DVIDS Journalist of the Month for October used both photography and news articles to report on military training and technology, and the soldiers themselves. Sgt. Margaret Taylor deployed to Afghanistan with the 129th Mobile Affairs Detachment and supported the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

Her photos were viewed more than 5,092 times and downloaded 270 times during the month. She not only ranked high for the number of views in October, she was also one of the top 15 military journalists in September for the number of image views. Because of the news value of her photos, the following media outlets ran her imagery: Military Times, Beauregard Daily News, Mother Jones and KGTV in San Diego.

There are currently five registered DVIDS users who have set up subscriptions to receive email alerts when Taylor posts new content. (Users can set up subscriptions based on journalist, keyword, unit, featured topic and more.)

In one gallery, Taylor provides snapshots of what service members do at her post. Besides the standard paperwork, mission briefings and training, Taylor snapped a photo of two soldiers spending free time to work on a puzzle. That photo shows a side of deployment life in Afghanistan that may not be seen as often. In another photo gallery, she helps explain the benefits of the unmanned aircraft, like the RQ-7B Shadow.

Taylor spotlights a U.S. Army sergeant's selflessness in one of her news articles, which ended up with more than 350 Facebook likes just on the DVIDS website. In another article she took a rather routine story about a combat lifesaver class and spiced up the lead to maintain the reader's attention. For both articles, Taylor also shot the supporting photographs.

"Sgt. Taylor's enthusiasm, inquisitiveness, and professionalism were a motivation to everyone she came in contact with. These qualities made every article she wrote and picture she took interesting and informative," said Capt. William Brink, the Public Affairs officer for 4th BCT, 10th Mountain.
