The February Journalist of the Month, Cpl. Harold (Alex) Flynn, helped document football fever in Afghanistan. Flynn also used his photography and broadcast skills to cover military operations for ISAF Regional Command South.

Not only were Flynn’s videos viewed more than 1,000 times in February, they also aired more than 50 times. The Killeen Daily Herald used his video feature on Spc. Bradley Copeland and what keeps him going during his deployment.

“Cpl. Alex Flynn has a unique capability as a journalist when it comes to embedding with a variety of combat and support units. He possesses the ability to blend in with these units and perform the same tasks or missions its Soldiers are performing and to make Soldiers who he is interviewing comfortable in front of the camera,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Breig, media operations NCO for the 70th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment and 4th Infantry Division public affairs.

However, it was his footage of Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh visiting with troops in Afghanistan that caught the most attention. His videos of Harbaugh aired numerous times on the NFL Network, CSN MidAtlantic and WMAR-TV.

One of Flynn’s most popular photos also centered on football. His photo from the Kandahar Airfield Super Bowl Party captures the excitement of an U.S. Army soldier as the Seattle Seahawks score a touchdown during Super Bowl XLVIII. The photo was picked up by several media outlets including NBC News, Military Times and Stars and Stripes.

Some of his other photos show combat medics working to save the lives of Afghans during Operation Chamtoo II. He also shot videos of the operation. His gallery “Alamo Scout” includes examples of his photography skill.

“Cpl. Flynn's unique capabilities result in products ranging from on camera interviews to photos, which captivate his audiences. Cpl. Flynn earns their trust not only as a Soldier, but also as a journalist who tells the Soldier's story,” said Breig.
