Sgt. Agustin Montanez-Peguero was born on Sept. 11, 1992 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He has been proudly serving in the Armed Forces since 2014. Montañez is currently deployed in Poland with the 113th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment from the Puerto Rico National Guard, in support of the European Deterrence Initiative, and holds the position of Public Affairs Mass Communication Sergeant. His current responsibilities include daily media analysis and the research, preparation, and distribution of news releases, articles, web-based material, and photographs of Army personnel and activities.
Sgt. Montañez graduated from Basic Combat Training in November 2014. Subsequently, he completed his Advanced Individual Training in February 2015. In 2017, Montañez worked in the hurricane relief efforts after Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated Puerto Rico. He reenlisted on another 6-year contract with the National Guard in 2019. In March 2020, he deployed for one year to Texas with a task force belonging to the 65th Infantry Regiment in support of the Southwest Border Mission. Upon arrival at his home station, Sgt. Montañez attended the Basic Leadership Course, where he made the Commandant’s list after graduating in the top 20% of his class. In August of that same year, he had to defer law school after being mobilized to Haiti to cover the Puerto Rico Army National Guard Aviation earthquake-relief efforts.
During his service, Sgt. Montañez has received the following awards and recognitions: Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
His civilian education consists of a Bachelor in Arts with a Concentration in Political Science from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). Upon finishing his current deployment, Sgt. Montañez will re-enroll at the UPR, where he intends to complete his Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
