Austin Rooney was born in Bonn, Germany, and grew up abroad in Gabon, Germany, and El Salvador. When he returned to the United States, he enlisted in the US Navy to serve his country.  In the Navy, he performed his duties as a Mass Communication Specialist, serving on aircraft carriers, deploying to the Middle East, capturing still images and video, and managing other Sailors in multimedia operations. During his enlistment, Austin was named Outstanding New Navy Writer in 2010, Navy  Journalist of the Year in 2012, and his work on revamping the ship's magazine earned it the Best Print Publication in the US Navy in 2013. After his five-year enlistment, Austin transitioned into another challenging job, this time as a videographer and still photographer for a nonprofit disaster relief organization, Operation Blessing International. With Operation Blessing, Austin travelled the country on a moment's notice, responding within hours to major disasters and capturing video and still images of the devastation and rebuilding efforts. His footage was used by major national news networks, as well as broadcast daily to an audience of more than 1 million people. He then transferred to the Christian Broadcasting Network as a videographer, shooting news stories, feature stories, and working with the state-of-the-art equipment. He has traveled around the US, Europe, and Africa covering stories which are broadcast to a television audience of millions of people in over 147 countries, and an online audience of millions more across the globe. Austin then accepted a job with the US Navy's headquarters command at the Pentagon as a Visual Information Specialist for the Department of the Navy, using his skills and background to produce creative graphics and infographics, shoot and edit videos and motion graphics, and take still photographs. Austin's work was published globally to the US Navy's official Youtube, Facebook, and other social media platforms, as well as picked up by websites and news networks worldwide. Austin currently works for the Department of Defense at the Defense Media Activity at Fort Meade, where he shoots and produces videos for the Navy's flagship publication, All Hands Magazine.
