Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin Stumberg, Navy Visual News Service, separated himself from the other photographers reporting on the Haiti devastation by getting close to critical rescue efforts. As shown in his Haiti Relief Effort gallery, Stumberg’s images show the emotion of a rescue, how many rescue workers it takes for one extraction and the conditions under which they worked.
In addition to close up photos of rescues, Stumberg backed up to show the military operations at the Port-au-Prince International Airport. The overview photo illustrated the size of the military efforts required to facilitate the individual rescues.
At least two of Stumberg’s Haiti photos from his rescue gallery were picked up by the wire services and resulted in numerous placements from Life magazine, Los Angeles County Web site and Palm Beach Post to TV stations in Utah, Texas and New Orleans.
Stumberg arrived in Haiti in the midst of the rescue efforts and was able to position himself for the angles that captured the attention of the wire services.
Many other military photographs captured the emotion surrounding the Haiti devastation and the military working to provide relief. Unfortunately, many of the photographs did not include byline information, and so the photographer will not receive the same recognition as Stumberg, whose images pop up in Google searches of his name and who also has his own journalist portfolio on DVIDS. show less
