    Story by Airman William Pugh

    2nd Bomb Wing

Three Airmen from the 2nd Munitions Squadron missile maintenance section received awards from Air Force Global Strike Command for their exemplary service.

Master Sgt. Brandon Tanaka, 2nd MUNS missile maintenance section chief, Senior Airman Kriston Kanemoto, 2nd MUNS munitions controller, and Senior Airman Dolton Wood, 2nd MUNS missile maintenance team chief, were all recognized for their integral part in providing decisive nuclear deterrence and conventional firepower to AFGSC.

“Most people don't really know what happens behind the scenes here,” Tanaka said. We do what’s needed to get the missiles out there next to the airplane, ready to go.”

Missile maintainers are responsible for the upkeep and readiness of both conventional cruise missiles and nuclear cruise missiles. Their diligence ensures the nation’s continued defense and security.

“We're kind of a one stop shop,” Wood Said. “From the fuels and electronic testing, to component removal, we do it all here.”

With such an important role in the mission, the missile maintenance unit continuously strives to improve efficiency and safety, a quality that gained the unit some recognition.

“We worked on ways to improve nuclear surety and get things certified faster,” Tanaka said. “That's where the meat of the award came from, by acquiring a cruise missile that won’t cause us the same pitfalls that we've had in the past.”

Having been awarded for his diligence in his daily efforts, being commended at the command level has inspired Wood to help newer Airmen succeed.

“When the time comes, and I have troops of my own,” Wood said. “I will have an understanding of the importance of recognizing the work they have done. I’ll make sure they're rewarded.”

    The Airmen awarded were:
    - Senior Airman Kriston Kanemoto, 2nd MUNS munitions controller, attained Maintenance Support Professional of the Year for AFGSC on March 12, 2021.
    - Senior Airman Dolton Wood, 2nd MUNS missile maintenance team chief, was awarded Maintenance Professional of the Year for AFGSC on March 12, 2021.
    - MSgt. Brandon Tanaka, 2nd MUNS missile maintenance section chief, received The General Larry D. Welsh award for innovation in nuclear security on March 11, 2021.
