The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz’s (CVN 68) 188 Sailors who were selected for advancement attended Petty Officer Selectee Leadership Course (POSLC), May 29-30.

POSLC provides Sailors with information about their new role as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd class petty officer and focuses on the Navy core values of honor, courage and commitment.

“We help Sailors who go through the indoctrination learn what their responsibilities are,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Jacob Baker, from Flint, Michigan. “We show them that they have authority now as petty officers and a responsibility to Sailors under them.”

Training segments in POSLC include crisis communication, conflict resolutions and continuous improvement to name a few, however, more than classes are needed in their new roles.

“There are Navy instructions that give them authority, but it is up to them to learn leadership skills to use that authority effectively,” said Baker.

For many Sailors, this is the first time they will be in a leadership position and be responsible for someone other than themselves.

“During indoctrination I want to learn about leadership skills, because this promotion is the first milestone of my naval career track,” said Yeoman Seaman Beniah Williams, from Quebec, Canada. “I want to learn how to be an effective leader now, so I am in a position to help my Sailors in the future.”

The POSLC classes are taught by senior enlisted Sailors who share their experiences as leaders in the Navy.

“When a chief petty officer relates sea stories, it helps me to see different ways to handle problems that I might encounter,” said Williams. “It helps to receive some honest feedback from a chief about when they were 3rd class petty officers, and helps me to feel like we are not alone with any fears that we may have.”

Mentorship is a major part of POSLC equal to the knowledge that each Sailor will gain during the course.

“As senior Sailors, we want to bring up the next generation of leaders because we know that they are going to be the ones who take our place and help run the Navy,” said Baker.

Petty officers are the first line of leadership in the Navy and play a large role in shaping junior Sailors into the leaders of the future. The 188 Sailors who advanced this cycle were frocked at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, June 1.

Nimitz is currently conducting a docking planned incremental availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility where the ship is receiving scheduled maintenance and upgrades.
