TULSA, Okla. - 2d Lt Jennifer Carson, 138th Fighter Wing Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, raised sexual assault awareness for airmen on April 7, 2018 through a visual display here on the installation.Adorning the lawn surrounding the Brig. Gen. Joseph W. Turner Complex parking area stood 435 teal ribbons signifying the 435 sexual assaults reported within Air National Guard units throughout the United States in 2016. “By seeing 435 ribbons, I hope to help airmen grasp the damage that sexual assault has on the Air National Guard and our mission,” stated Carson.

Carson, along with several other volunteers, were successful in their awareness campaign endeavor and the display put the sensitive topic into perspective across the wing. Senior airman Shannan Hanson, a client systems technician in the 138th Communication Flight, described the visualization as “overwhelming” and went on to say “when you stop and think that each of those ribbons represent an airman, it’s horrific. Each of them are a member of our guard family.” Other airmen surveyed had similar feelings to Hanson’s. Several also had a positive outlook that these airmen felt confident enough in the system to report a sexual assault without retaliation; a sign of trust in the program.

Even wing leadership emphasizes that culture, influence and tone begins from the top. When asked about the impact that sexual assault has on his wing Col. Raymond H. Siegfried III, 138th Fighter Wing commander, stated “Sexual assault has no place within the Air National Guard. We are a family and we don’t treat our family with anything but respect and dignity. Sexual assault is not only a crime against the victim, it degrades our readiness, relationships, and mission accomplishment. We are better than that.”

Carson asks that each airman “take a moment to consider how they can be involved in challenging the culture of sexual assault within the military.”
