When the American Revolution began on April 19, 1775, the colonies relied on local militias to defend their homes. However, as the war intensified, it became clear that an organized, centralized army was necessary to challenge the British.
First adopted by the War Office of the Continental Army, This We’ll Defend has been the U.S. Army’s defining motto since 1778.
More than just words, it encapsulates the Army’s enduring mission: to safeguard the nation, protect its citizenry, and uphold its values.
On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army, marking the beginning of what would become the United States Army. This formation occurred during a difficult period when colonists—comprising of farmers, blacksmiths, and merchants—responded to the call to defend their rights and liberty against British rule.
