Marines use metal detectors to sweep a culvert during a route reconnaissance mission, ensuring the area is clear of improvised explosive devices. The purpose of the mission is to document different aspects of the route, such as incline/decline, sharpness of curves and width. The data is used to calculate where improvements need to be made in order to prevent washout along the route. Photos by Cpl. Meredith Brown. Produced by Gunnery Sgt. Brian Griffin.
