U.S. service members tested themselves by participating in the French physical fitness challenge “Chat Maigre”, or Thin Cat. The term Thin Cat is commonly used by French soldiers to refer to someone who is physically fit and agile. The competition is derived from a French officer school tradition and has become a regularly occurring event. Americans are encouraged to participate alongside the French soldiers every six months when the event is held. The Thin Cat challenge consists of: 50 pull-ups, six 20-foot rope climbs, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, a 400-meter run carrying a 66-pound sack and finally with ten 135-pound bench-presses; all of which must be completed in under 35 minutes if you want to be “Chat Maigre”. Staff Sergeant Samuel Sargent, Competitor:
“Pretty much, all upper body, it was more than I was actually prepared for, but I made it through it. If you want to do it train for it and just keep in your mind that you just got to keep moving to the next thing. Keep on truckin’.” Produced by Petty Officer Jeremy Brandt, reporting from Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa. Also available in High Definition, with titles.
