The city of Zaranj is located on the Iranian border and is one of Afghanistan's most vital trading links to the rest of the world. The port of entry generates about 100 million dollars a year. Building a new customs facility will help increase the traffic flow and prevent illegal goods from crossing over the border. All U.S. funded projects in Afghanistan require all Afghan workers to be entered into the Biometric automated toolset system (B.A.T.). The BAT system is a combination of fingerprint, Iris and facial recognition which gives the operator a greater certainty of identification. Soundbites from Col. Michael Lawrence, Suffolk, Va., Maj. Michael Volmer, Jacksonville, Fla. Produced by Staff Sgt. Daniel Symonds. Also available in high definition.
