    1. Why are Jet Engine Test Cells conducted at night?

Testing is completed at night time for two reasons: the first is due to flight operations usually taking place during the daytime and the fantail is not necessarily safe while aircraft are being recovered. The second reason is for proper visibility of the afterburner flame. It must light at specific times and display the proper "brilliance" indicating full power has been achieved.

    2. At what point are these tests conducted? Is this of periodic maintenance or following a complete overhaul?

Testing at the intermediate level is conducted after a motor is built and before it is issued to the air wing. Testing is also required after a major repair or module replacement. Testing is required for all Hornet and Superhornet motors prior to use and they are the only motors that AIMD conducts major repairs and testing on.
