Army Reserve PFC Janeen Phelps has performed at numerous events in Southern Nevada and on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, where she helped open the Hooters Hotel as a
member of the house band: Level 8. She was a finalist on the nationally televised “Showtime at the Apollo” in Harlem, N.Y. She won the title of Miss Black Nevada USA 2005. Phelps, 29,
performed on the high seas for six years as a vocalist for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Her musical influences range from Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and Stevie Wonder to Selena, Trijntje Oosterhuis, and Gretchen Parlato. Phelps, however, is not just about singing. She was the first African-American woman to play soccer for Lander
University in Greenwood, S.C. She joined the Army at age 28 to pursue an overseas career in Arabic translation. “I knew that the military would be a great place for me to cultivate what I’m doing right now with school and give me actual environments to use the language
training that I’m acquiring,” Phelps said. “I expect to actually see the Army outside of TRADOC. I really am still a neophyte in regards to the Army. I’m so blessed to be able to still do what I love and serve my country. I don’t think too many people can say that.” Available in high definition.
