Marines and sailors with the 5th Marine Regiment honored Staff Sgt. Randolph Elder with the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously during a ceremony at the 5th Marines Memorial Garden, Aug. 16,. Elder was among the first African Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps after it was desegregated during 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
