ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Vice Adm. David Pekoske, Pacific Area commander, presents the Coast Guard Commendation Award to Walter G. Firestone, a Coast Guard veteran, during an award ceremony on Coast Guard Island here March 17.
Firestone received the award 66 years after he and his shipmates helped control a fire that broke out aboard the S.S. El Estero, and threatened to ignite more than 6,300 tons of explosives and ordnance onboard the vessel, surrounding vessels and on the pier (U.S. Coast Guard video/Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Anderson)
