Marines with 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, participated in a wildland firefighting class aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., June 27, 2014. Due to the current drought in the Western United States, I Marine Expeditionary Force decided to pre-train a group of Marines to be ready if they are needed. These Marines are not being trained to be ready for an immediate response to routine local fires that are normally short in duration, but for those uncommon situations in which larger fires burn out of control for long periods, exhausting all primary firefighting resources. Military personnel may be deployed to respond to those types of emergencies in a supplementary capacity under the Defense Support of Civil Authorities process. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl.
