Repairs continue on Locks and Dam 3 on the Monongahela River at Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. On July 22, workers at the 107-year old structure replaced the gate seals, put corrosion protection anodes in place, and repaired the existing hinges. The team then re-installed the upper land chamber miter gate seen here in time-lapse video.
Elizabeth Locks and Dam was originally slated for removal in 2004 as part of the Lower Mon River Project. Crews have extended its life to provide reliable navigation while work continues to complete modifications at Locks and Dam 4 at Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Once the Elizabeth facility is removed, commercial and recreational vessel operators will enjoy a continuous navigation pool from upstream Charleroi to downstream Braddock, Pennsylvania. The tow barge industry will enjoy $220 million in average annual cost savings.
Inefficient funding has pushed the project completion date back to at least 2028 with an estimated price tag of $2.7 billion.
