Video by Sgt. 1st Class Rick McNamara

    AFN Pacific

Senior enlisted leaders from all over Korea came to Yongsan to begin a 58-hour intense team building exercise. Sergeant First Class Rick McNamara explains how their integrity was the first thing challenged.

This was only the beginning of the 58-hour Mangudai event as the competitors fly off to their first objective a Republic of Korea Army obstacle course.
    Reporter:
It was an early morning call to formation, with the backdrop of the largest city in South Korea in the distance. How many clicks [nat sound pop] can eighty of the most senior enlisted leaders in Korea cover in 58 hours? Well, they’d have to get past the first part of the challenge to find out - the shakedown. Soldiers looking through their bag were looking for [nat sound pop] well anything basically not allowed for this event.
    Sb ssg bailey:
We’re looking for any type of paraphernalia like, food… candy… any umm, electronic devices
    Reporter:
But did they actually hope to find something on their senior enlisted leaders.
    Sb ssg bailey:
    Hopefully i… hopefully i don’t
    Reporter:
Eighty senior enlisted leaders are going to compete for the title of mangudai warrior
    Sb csm troxell:
If you try and do it individually, chances are we’re going to fail, but if you work as a team you’re going to be able to accomplish every task that we have to do over the next three days.
    Reporter:
Broken down into two platoons of four squads, the mangudai competitors wait for choppers to fly them out. With the first day just beginning there’s only one known fact about the upcoming challenge. It’s going to test everyone’s physical, mental and emotional limits. The competitors climb aboard and fly off… not knowing what comes next, but knowing more is sure to come. Reporting from yongsan korea, i’m army sergeant rick mcnamara.
