Multiple U.S. Marine CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters and CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 (HMM-262), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), aboard the flight deck of the forward deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD-2), prepare for humanitarian aid/disaster relief mission to Misawa, Japan in support of Operation Tomodachi. The 31st MEU's involvement is part of a larger U.S. government response, after a 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan causing wide spread damage.
