United States Marines with III Marine Expeditionary Force load Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief supplies and personnel aboard C-130 aircraft to be flown to mainland Japan as part of Operation Tomodachi, aboard Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, March 13, 2011. The long standing and close working relationship between the United States and its Japanese counterparts and the close proximity of the U.S. air assets stationed aboard MCAS Futenma allowed the coordination of the two governments to rapidly respond to areas devastated by a massive earthquake and Tsunami which struck northern Japan on March 11. Aircraft from MCAS Futenman fly critically needed capabilities and supplies provided, in joint, by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development, in constant consultation with Japanese authorities and United States Pacific Command into the areas affected by the recent earthquake and Tsunami.
