Airmen, retirees, families, supporters and leadership of the Arkansas National Guard packed the hangar at the 189th Airlift Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard at Little Rock Air Force Base on Saturday, June 06, 2015, as Brig. Gen. James K. Vogel assumed command of the 2,000 member Arkansas Air National Guard.

Maj. Gen. Mark Berry, adjutant general of the Arkansas National Guard referred to Vogel in his remarks during the ceremony as “a high-energy general officer with a passion for the Air National Guard and the ultimate resume of accomplishments.” He credited Vogel with beginning work on positioning the Arkansas Air National Guard to add several new missions to its portfolio even before coming to be officially installed as the new commander.

“Kurt Vogel was my last and critical addition to the leadership team that I have been trying to build to take the Arkansas Army and Air National Guard forward into the future,” said Berry. “His wealth of experience at the Pentagon and with the legislative processes at the highest levels of government will propel the Arkansas National Guard to greatness.”

Vogel, a command pilot with over 2,700 hours flying time and 30 years of service with the active Air Force and Air National Guard, brings a vast array of experience to the command. Most recently he served as the Director of the Office of Legislative Liaison for the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon.

Brig. Gen. James K. Vogel thanked the members and retirees of the Arkansas Air National Guard for their warm welcome to the organization. He said many of his colleagues in Washington, D.C. mentioned the fine reputation of the Arkansas Air National Guard as they congratulated him on the new position. And that speaks volumes for the organization he said.

His vision for the Arkansas Air National Guard is bright. He said the Arkansas Guard is well positioned with our legislative leaders, congressmen and senators who are all very well supportive of what we do. We just need to keep pushing forward as a united team.

“For me, I consider our single most valuable resource is our people. Together, working as a team there is absolutely nothing that we cannot achieve,” said Vogel. With that he challenged leaders at all levels of the organization to take care of their people and maintain the strength of the team.
