A Canadian Air Force C130 refuels an Italian Air Force Tornado fighter jet in mid air over Trapani Air Base in Sicily. Air to air refuelling is just one of many examples of the interactions taking place between various NATO nations during exercise Trident Juncture.
Captain Josef Sliwinski, of the Canadian Air Force 435 Squadron, talks about what it takes to refuel fighter jets in mid air while piloting a C130 tanker.

‘Air to air refuelling is more difficult for the receiver aircraft than it is for the tanker. Our hardest part is getting on time to the right spot with enough fuel and from that point on we just basically hold a stable platform for the others to tank off. After we get our checks done we extend the hoses and the fighter pilot basically has to maneuver his probe into the drone to receive the fuel and that’s where the skill lies, definitely.’

‘‘Today re refueled, we were supposed to refuel two fighters from Italy, they’re Tornado aircraft, one of them ended up dropping out but we gassed one successfully and that was my first time ever tanking an Italian.’
