HS SALAMIS (Soundbites)
4. (00:00 – 00:27) ENGLISH SOUNDBITE – LIEUTENANT KONSTANTINOS CHOUZOURIS (HN) OPERATION OFFICER.
“The duties that we have to perform here in our deployment in the Aegean Sea is to conduct ISR operations, that is Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance operations. To that end we use the full spectrum of the sensors, for example the radar to detect small migrant boats coming from Turkey to the Greek islands, visual observation and of course our helicopter, which is capable of scanning a wide area, very fast, very accurately and even during night.” ”I believe the importance of this operation can be illustrated through the statistics that we receive from our counterparts in the Hellenic coast guard. For example, within a week there have been about 900 attempts for small boats to pass from Turkey to the Greek islands and roughly 8,000 people were rescued by the Hellenic coast guard. Therefore, our 24/7 watch here on board the ship, with roughly 190 people on board, is actually helping in creating a robust picture of those migrant flows and be able to disseminate this picture to the appropriate national authorities and help them in dealing with this humanitarian crisis.” “We are actively conducting patrols in our assigned areas, we are in collaboration with our national authorities and we are building a robust picture of the traffic in the Aegean Sea. “I must say that the current environment of the Aegean Sea is rather difficult, because it is littered with literally hundreds of small islands, the distance between the Greek and the Turkish coast is very small, so migrant ships can travel it very fast and very quickly. That is our main concern.”
