NATO witnessed history on June 7, 2016, when Admiral Michelle Howard assumed command of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. She continues to be the highest ranking female US Navy Officer, and now became the first female NATO joint force command commander, as well as the highest ranking female commander in NATO. Her leadership role supports NATO efforts in gender balance and diversity, as well as promoting the role of women in peace and security.
