Why are the gliders useful for a NAVY Commander?
“The Glider are going to be useful for the future because this will improve our understanding of what’s happening under water, and as a result it enables us to better focus on our underwater detection systems and find unlocated submarines.”
18:06-18:32
In what way do the glider enhance the picture what you already have today?
“They do give us far more detailed information. It is a complicated environment and the more information we receive the better we will be able to focus our systems and find these submarines. It is a very complex environment and it is only by being in the environment that we are able to get the information we need. And that’s what the gliders give us, a unique, at the right time, in the right place source of information.”
18:38-18:53
What do the gliders play for a role in the upcoming Exercise DYNAMIC MONGOOSE?
“The gliders have an important role in DYNAMIC MONGOOSE this year which has over 12 nations in it. They will be providing direct environmental support to the Commanders at sea to enable them to help with the Exercise refine their tactics and procedures.”
18:58-19:24
With this capability, what does NATO provide to the Nations?
“Well, this is an important capability. One of the realities of today is that equipment and technology is becoming more expensive. What NATO is able to do by investing in these gliders is to provide this information to the Nations, all of them needed to work more effectively under water. So, it’s a great opportunity for NATO on the one hand and for the Nations on the other to improve their overall understanding of the environment.”

Sound bite of Dr. Raul Vicen, Senior Scientist, NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE)
19:41-20:06
What is the purpose of CMRE being here at the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Exercise (CWIX)?
“We have two main objectives here. The first one is to remotely Command & Control and allow these to the Nations to be able to do these tasking to the fleet of glider we have deployed in the Atlantic. And the second one is to be able to disseminate the information we are collecting from the sea directly to the operational side and to put this information into their systems. Everything should be automatically done, following some standards we are working on.”
20:18-20:42
What’s the importance to feed to data to the national systems?
“On this regard, we have two main objectives. The first one is to enhance the recognized maritime picture that we working in the maritime. And it’s mainly focused to enhance the information we have in the underwater domain with the underwater gliders we deploy at sea. And the second one is to provide the information for the recognized environmental picture focusing on the environmental characterization we are doing with our underwater gliders.”
20:51-21:07
What can the NAVY Commander do with the data?
“On one side it is very useful for the geomatoc branches at commands. On the second one it is very useful for ASW commands. So, it’s good to know what’s going on in the underwater environment so that they can plan operations in advance.”
21:11-21:28
What’s the challenge here at CWIX?
“Here CMRE is working with the Nations in creating standards so that we understand each other and we are able to transfer information from one capability from one nation to another. And we are able to portrait the information into their screen or in our screens.”
21:29-22:16
