Colonel Charles Young Memorial Service: On September, 20 2017 a day of recognition service was held at the gravesite of Col. Charles Young in Arlington National Cemetery. Charles Young (March 12, 1864 – January 8, 1922) was the third African-American graduate of West Point, the first black U.S. national park superintendent, first black military attaché, first black man to achieve the rank of colonel, and highest-ranking black officer in the Regular Army until his death in 1922. The service was presented by The National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations in cooperation with the Buffalo Soldiers Greater Washington DC Chapter 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association. Colors were presented by the Howard University Army ROTC Bison Battalion. Following speeches, a wreath was laid at Young’s gravesite.
