In the course of a week, the 179th Airlift Wing has sent three C-130H Hercules with personnel and assets to provide aid and support efforts in the wake of Hurricane Irma and Maria. With the first aircraft out on September 27, 2017, the airlift wing is providing support to the Virgin Islands with two C-130H Hercules stage out of Georgia and running missions to and from the Virgin Islands. The second C-130H aircraft left on September 29, 2017 to take a team of Airmen from the 269th Combat Communication Squadron (CBCS) from Springfield, Ohio, to the Virgin Islands. The 200th RED HORSE also sent a team to the Virgin Islands to build and operate a Disaster Relief Bed-down System (DRBS) which provides basic life needs such as shelter, showers and latrines for up to 300 people. With the recent departure on October 4, 2017, a third C-130H Hercules was sent with a team of services Airmen from the 179th AW and the 178th Wing along with a Disaster Relief Mobile Kitchen Trailer (DRMKT) to Puerto Rico. The team will run and operate the mobile kitchen which can feed up to 1,000 people in 90 minutes. These Ohio Air National Guard Airmen are always ready to respond with a team of trusted Airmen for state and federal missions.
