The cutter is named for Chief Machinist's Mate Oliver Berry of South Carolina who served honorably in the Coast Guard beginning in 1929 and continuing beyond World War II. Berry was a critical member of early Naval Aviation. The cutter named in his honor is the first of three Sentinel class cutters to be stationed in Hawaii. Vice Adm.
