Veterans in Blue is a multimedia collection showcasing men and women who have contributed to the legacy of the Air Force.
John Kidd took an interest in airplanes at a young age and followed in his father’s footsteps by enlisting in the Air Force on Aug. 28, 1968. Kidd served 24 years working as an aircraft acquisition engineer, airlift command and controller, F-111 aircraft maintenance officer, and later earning various pilot qualifications for C-141 and C-5 aircraft. During the Vietnam War, his Southeast Asia based F-111 unit garnered recognition as one of the best aircraft maintenance organizations. He also earned the Military Airlift Command Flyer award for landing a C-5 with multiple emergencies including a retracted nose landing gear. Kidd flew more than 7,000 hours before retiring as a lieutenant colonel Aug. 31, 1992, as a C-5 instructor pilot. Kidd now spends much of his time working with his wife, Robyn, on their farm, providing hay bales to Jackson County, Oklahoma, and its surrounding areas.
