Philadelphia – This is an overview of Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division’s (NSWCPD) Hybrid Electric Drive (HED) Backfit program at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia. The purpose of the HED program is to provide an additional, alternative means of main ship propulsion that, at low speeds, consumes less fuel, and enables longer time on station than the currently installed gas turbine engines on Arleigh Burke class destroyers alone. This is one of a multi-part series highlighting the technical capabilities of NSWCPD. (U.S. Navy video / Released).
