In charge of four tanks, six months away from home. No problem for Norway’s female tank commander Lieutenant Silje Johansen Willassen, who recently deployed to NATO’s battlegroup in Lithuania.
Norwegian tanks have been deployed to Lithuania to support NATO’s enhanced forward presence in the region.
The company, of around 200 troops, belongs to Norway’s Telemark Battalion. They provided support to the German-led multinational battlegroup. The deployment lasted six months.
Commanding one of the platoons was Lieutenant Silje Johansen Willassen, Norway’s Telemark Battalion’s first female tank commander. Lieutenant Willassen discusses the deployment and what it takes to deploy overseas.
