Retired Tech. Sgt. Cory Anderson joined the Air Force in October of 2002 as an emergency medical technician, a job similar to what Anderson did before enlisting. He said he lived for the temporary duties, field work and opportunities to work with trauma during the time he served. Anderson was also hand-picked to become a military training instructor from 2006 to 2010, a special duty he said was incredibly fun. He expressed his pride and how being in the military gave him a greater appreciation for the United States. Shortly after he returned to his EMT position, he deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan, for seven months. Once home from deployment, Anderson was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and struggled with being back in the States. “It’s hard for people to understand, but I wanted to go back,” he said. After receiving help for his PTSD per his wife’s request, Anderson said he was introduced to the Warrior Games through a friend. He tried out and was accepted into the Air Force team in 2014 and quickly grew to love the camaraderie, which he missed from when he was enlisted. Now, Anderson owns his own construction business and applies the work ethic he learned from the Air Force to his daily life.
