Before a special session of congress - May 25th, 1961 – President Kennedy revealed his intentions to create what is now known as the world’s elite, clandestine maritime military force - the Navy SEALs.
SOUNDBITE: Former President John F. Kennedy
I am directing the Secretary of Defense to expand rapidly and substantially, in cooperation with our Allies, the orientation of existing forces for the conduct of non-nuclear war, paramilitary operations and sub-limited or unconventional wars.
In addition our Special Forces and unconventional warfare units will be increased and reoriented.
NARRATOR: PO1 Lynn F. Andrews
Kennedy’s remarks opened the door for SEAL TEAMs ONE and TWO to be established.
Many of the first SEALs came out of the Underwater Demolition Team units who fought in the Korea war. Since their founding in 1962 - SEALs have been part of nearly every military operation spanning from the Vietnam War to present day conflicts in the Middle East.
Today’s Navy SEALs, armed with the most modern war fighting techniques and hardware - carry on a legacy of more than 5 decades of naval heritage.
