In the aftermath of Hurricane María, Puerto Rico was left devastated. Beyond the destruction that survivors and the island's infrastructure endured, history, and culture were seriously affected directly and indirectly by the powerful hurricane. A group of professionals and members of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force (HENTF) visited Puerto Rico in several occasions, and provided training and guidance to librarians, museum staff, and archivists to clean and protect cultural artifacts, books, and historic documents, among others. FEMA and the Smithsonian Institution co-sponsored the HENTF, which is a partnership of more than 50 national service organizations and federal agencies created to protect cultural heritage from the damaging effects of natural disasters and other emergencies.
