Blue skies and snowy mountains welcomed the first operational Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-35A Lightning II during an arrival ceremony at Misawa Air Base, Japan, Jan. 26.
Within the next 12 months, nine more F-35s will combine to create the first fifth generation fighter squadron assigned to Koku-Jieitai’s 3rd Air Wing.
Japan is one of 12 countries to purchase the F-35A in efforts to maximize air superiority among allied nations and plans to acquire 42 total F-35A’s as successors to its F-4 fighter aircraft.
