VIEQUES, Puerto Rico –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed repairs on two 3.3 megawatt generator on Vieques Feb. 15-16 to bring additional generating capacity to the grid.
"It's safe to that with one 3 megawatt generator up, we can power what we have on grid on the island, which is roughly 50% of the population here," said Jim Cole, a quality assurance specialist for the USACE Task Force Power mission. “Now that we have both generators up, we can power the entire island once the grid has been completely repaired.”
The fuel injectors were replaced on non-federal generators owned by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, and were a difficult component to locate. They had to be ordered from a warehouse in Finland and flown to Vieques. USACE also has two federal generators that serve as a backup to the system.
USACE has been tasked with the maintenance of privately owned non-federal generators at critical public facilities to continue to operate until grid power is restored. (Photo released by Maj. Michael N. Meyer, USACE.)
