Recruits battle each other in the pugil sticks arena at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Throughout the phases of boot camp, they will have three chances to battle each other, simulating a potential combat situation with a weapon. Recruits were paired by weight and supervised by their drill instructors to ensure a clean and safe match. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego.
