Chief Petty Officer Laura Dovico and Petty Officer 1st Class Jimmy Romero share an overview of the ESF-10 Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Response mission. The ESF-10 unified response team focused specifically on the removal of impacted vessels to prevent spills of oil and other hazardous materials. ESF-10 partner agencies included the U.S. Coast Guard, Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and contracted salvage companies. With $35 million in FEMA funds assigned to the mission, response teams removed or mitigated 376 vessels, approximately 25,000 gallons of oily water, and over 2 million pounds of solid waste from the environment.
