A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III from the Mississippi Air National Guard's 172nd Airlift Wing transported six injured children and their guardians to Galveston, Texas, for medical treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children. A joint medical team from the Mississippi ANG's 183rd Air Evacuation Squadron and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, provided en route medical treatment during the flight from Guatemala to Galveston, Texas. The U.S. Air Force humanitarian airlift aeromedical evacuation mission was conducted at the direction of U.S. Southern Command to assist the government of Guatemala following the recent eruption of Fuego Volcano.
