Dr. Alexis Catsambis, an archaeologist with the Naval History and Heritage Command discusses the July 2018 survey and commemoration ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the USS San Diego (ACR 6). The Naval History and Heritage Command partnered with Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two and USNS Grasp to survey and interpret the wreck site of World War I era armored cruiser USS San Diego in July 2018. The survey culminated in a commemoration ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the vessel on July 19, 2018. USS San Diego (ACR 6), now resting off the coast of Fire Island, NY, was the major U.S. Navy loss during the Great War. Six Sailors perished along with the ship, which serves as a war grave.
