Interview with Hassan Jamal Ahmed who is a project manager and civil engineer with the Toor Senqa Company. Toor Senqa is currently tasked with overseeing the removal of debris around Mosul University left behind by the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The University of Mosul is a public university located in Mosul, Iraq. It is one of the largest educational and research centers in the Middle East, and the second largest in Iraq, behind the University of Baghdad.
The University of Mosul was closed by ISIS in 2014 but reopened a few months later with new buildings and courses. Over 8,000 books and 100,000 manuscripts in its library were allegedly destroyed. The university was considered to be a base for ISIS and was hit by Coalition airstrikes in March 2016 in order to remove members of ISIS. Iraqi forces recaptured the campus in January 2017.
The United Nations is currently funding the project. Some of the restored facilities include the electrical engineering building, labs for mechanical and civil engineering students, the veterinarian building, computer programming building, and student housing.
Coalition forces, along with partner forces such as Mosul SWAT, continue to provide security in the Mosul area in order to support stabilization and reconstruction efforts. (U.S. Army video by Sgt. Rodney Roldan)
