Fort Hunter Liggett helped the K-8 grade children at San Antonio Elementary School in Lockwood, California understand the significance of the date 9-11 with a ceremony. The children assembled outside to hear principal Pam Hernandez introduce Chaplain (Maj.) Levi Marshall, who led with a prayer, and then the honor guard for a salute to fallen heroes. A Civilian policeman and firefighter joined three Soldiers and, while Taps was played, saluted a memorial set up for each service, including the classic tribute to the fallen Soldier: combat boots, rifle, dog tags, and helmet. Deputy garrison commander, Lt. Col. Jason McKenzie spoke about the sacrifices made during the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. 1st Lt. Wanda Carr sang "God Bless America" and three Scouts from the school saluted the flag. As the children headed back to class, they filed through the ranks of Soldiers and Civilians and shook their hands.
