The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) breaks ice Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, about 660 miles northeast of Barrow, Alaska. The Healy is a 420-foot medium icebreaker, homeported in Seattle. As one of two icebreakers in U.S. service, the Healy is the only icebreaker dedicated to scientific research in the Arctic. Approximately 100 crew members and 30 scientists are aboard on a research project to study stratified ocean dynamics for the Office of Naval Research.
