Major General (ret.) Marcelite Jordan Harris was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, February 7th, 2019.
In 1965 Gen Harris was commissioned through officer training school at Lackland Air Force base, Texas.
She held a variety of assignments, which resulted in many “firsts” for women in the Air Force.
Gen Harris was the first female aircraft maintenance officer, first of two women Air officers commanding at the Air Force Academy, and the first woman deputy commander for maintenance.
In 1975 Gen Harris was named White House social aid and personnel staff officer during the presidential administration of Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.
Gen Harris made history in 1991 by becoming the first African American female Brigadier General in the Air Force, eventually promoting to the rank of Major General, which made her the highest-ranking African American female in the U.S. military.
