April 5th is designated as Gold Star Spouse Day, a recognition of those whose spouse was killed in the line of duty in combat. The Gold Star is a tradition that began during World War One when military families would fly flags with blue stars representing each family member serving in uniform. If that loved one died, the blue star was replaced by a gold star. Today, family members wear gold star lapels to honor those killed in combat. Gold Star Spouse Day honors these families and brings awareness to resources available to them.
