Cherbourg, France (June 2, 2019) The Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) arrives in the Port of Cherbourg, France, June 2, 2019. Roosevelt Sailors join more than 1,300 U.S. service members, partnered with approximately 950 troops from across Europe and Canada to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the WWII Allied invasion of Normandy, commonly known as D-Day. Upwards of 80 ceremonies in 40 French communities in the region will take place between June 1-9, the apex being held June 6th at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. This is the first ship named in honor of both Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States and First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. Currently homeported at Naval Station Mayport the Roosevelt was operating in U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations and participated in exercise Formidable Shield 2019.
