The U.S. Navy launched two LCAC (Landing Craft, Air Cushioned) hovercrafts from the USS Anchorage on Monday, June 3rd during a Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) training exercise at Sunset Beach near Warrenton, Oregon. LCACs have a payload of 60 tons, and can transport cargo such as humanitarian aid supplies and heavy construction vehicles to assist coastal areas that may be otherwise cut off during a natural disaster such as the Cascadia earthquake. DSCA conducts training with the Armed Forces in order to provide response and recovery efforts to assist in missions normally carried out by civil authorities such as natural or man-made disasters, law enforcement support, special events, and other domestic activities.
